Ophthalmologist Dr. Mustafa Parekh is one of the leading Corneal Specialists in India. Based in Mumbai, Dr. Parekh functions as Medical Director of Lotus Eye Hospital in Juhu, and is also a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Saifee Hospital and other hospitals in Mumbai, Gujarat and overseas (Tanzania). Dr. Mustafa Parekh's areas of specialisation include corneal transplants, and cataract and laser refractive surgeries. He is well-versed with all aspects of Ophthalmology including cataract surgery with IOL implantation, keratoplasty, ophthalmic trauma and all types of surgeries such as glaucoma, squint, retinal, vitreous and emergency surgery. He has also had considerable experience in angiography, Argon laser photo coagulation, YAG Laser and lasers in glaucoma. During his fellowship at Aravind Eye Hospital, he performed around 2,000 surgeries including IOL surgeries, sutureless surgeries, trauma surgeries, and PKP/tissue adhesive procedures. As a Consultant, he has done about 2,500 sutureless cataract surgeries, including about 500 phacoemulsification procedures since 1995, besides YAG, capsulotomy and glaucoma surgeries. He has also been involved in phacoemulsification and IOL training for junior consultants.
On the research front, Dr. Parekh has been involved in conducting several clinical trials. In addition he has also been involved in a comparative study of standard and small incision surgeries, studies dealing with various non-phaco techniques in sutureless surgeries, fungal and infectious keratitis and other eye injuries. Dr. Parekh has been associated with training too, having delivered lectures to undergraduates, and he has undergone post-graduate rounds along with clinical teaching, with operative demonstrations and case presentations. Apart from conducting student tutorials and revision lectures for final year MBBS students, he has been appointed as supervisor for many examinations including the Final MBBS, the DOMS and MS examinations in 1992.
Dr. Parekh has been involved in community ophthalmology, having attended around 70 eye camps held every fortnight organised through Aravind Eye Hospital for three and a half years. He has also conducted an eye camp in Gujarat in celebration of the 50th year of Indian Independence and anniversary of His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mhd. Burhanuddin Saheb, and several more in the state of Gujarat over the years. In addition, Dr. Parekh has regularly attended workshops and seminars including phacoemulsification and IOL Workshops at Aravind Eye Hospital.
